Assignment: Composition. This week we had to take photos that utilize some of the rules of composition: Focal Point, The Rule of Thirds, Locating the Horizon, Using Lines, Framing and Point of View.

lorikeets.jpg

This photo has a main "focal point", the middle Lorikeet. I used fill flash to isolate it from the background. The first lorikeet turned its head which was a bonus because it might have been distracting and this way there is no doubt as to which bird is the focal point.  ( Taken at 1/125  f 4.5 ) There was a sleeve in the upper left portion and a green chain link in the lower right portion both of which I used the cloning tool in PSP 7 to eliminate. I also cropped the right of the image slightly.

I liked how my daughter looked here. So I took the photo slightly off-center and tried to apply the Rule of Thirds.. I cropped the left edge somewhat to enhance the off-center composition. It was not as hard as I thought to bypass the "A" setting on my camera and head on over to the "M" setting. For this photo I used the spot meter and had it set to aperture priority. 1/524  f 3.2

pier.jpg

This is a pier at Deerfield Beach near where we live. I always stand at this vantage point and just look at the lines and the way they draw my eyes towards the end of the pier. So I decided to take a photo of it today. Once again, I used the spot meter and aperture priority.  1/28  f 10.3

More lines.. things like this catch my eye. The sandals weren't placed there (honestly) but I thought they looked great in the photo. I knelt down for a better vantage point and used a smaller aperture to have the sandcastles in focus.  1/92 sec   f 9.9  Spot Meter. The top portion was slightly cropped.
